EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON EFFECTS OF LOCAL ANESTHETICS ON SKIN PLAID SURVIVAL IN RATS

Abstract
Despite the wide use of local anesthetics in plastic surgery, relatively little has been proven about the effects of these agents on skin flaps.
Reinisch & Myers(1974) had reported that infiltration of 1% lidocaine had no influence on the surviving rate of skin flaps. But they did not study the effects of other local anesthetics and the more exact effect of lidocaine on the skin flaps.
This experiment was carried out to clarify the more exact effects of a few local anesthetics, which are used in common, on the skin flap survival in rats. A pair of skin flaps were designed on the each dorsum of rats and experimental local anesthetics were injected into the skin flaps for 7 days. Then the skin survival rate of each experimental group was compared with the survival rate of control group and following results were obtained:
1. The survival rate of 1% procaine group was no different to the survival rate of control group.
2. The survival rates of 2% lidocaine and 0.5% tetracaine groups were significantly decreased as compared with control group.
In conclusion, 1% procaine may be more preferable on the skin flap, the survival of which is questionable, to other local anesthetics.
